Donovan to miss Europe trip

[USA MEN] In a not entirely unexpected move, Landon Donovan has withdrawn from the U.S. national team roster for Friday's friendly against France at the Stade de France. No replacement will be named at this time for Donovan, who withdrew a day after helping the Los Angeles Galaxy reach MLS Cup 2011.

"The plan was to have Landon come in for the match against France and then return to the L.A. Galaxy in preparation for MLS Cup, but after further discussion Landon expressed his desire to stay in Los Angeles," said U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann. "While my preference was to have Landon with us for this important match, I respect his decision. I'm very happy with the progress this team is making and the commitment they have shown in each and every camp. We look forward to the challenge of the next two games."

Donovan recently returned to action with the Galaxy after being sidelined with a thigh injury. He missed the USA's two October friendlies because of the injury.

He is the only player on the Galaxy or the Houston Dynamo, the two MLS Cup finalists, to be called up to play for the USA.

Donovan's Galaxy teammate, Robbie Keane, returned to Europe to represent Ireland in its Euro 2012 qualifying playoff series against Estonia. He missed Ireland’s final group qualifier against Armenia because of an injury to his adductor muscle he picked up in the previous game against Andorra.

No other player on the Galaxy or Dynamo is expected to be called up for international duty.

I agree, John! Joy - Birchall is not American. He is Trinidadian. He even played for T&T in the 2006 WC.
