Mariah Nogueira’s header off Lindsay Taylor’s corner kick made it 1-0 in the 39th minute, Taylor added to the lead when she converted a penalty kick in the 59th minute, and freshman Chioma Ubogagu completed the scoring in the 73rd minute when she slotted in a pass from Sydney Payne.
Montana was making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 11 years. The Grizzlies finished with a 6-12-4 record.
The Cardinal (20-0-1) will host South Carolina (16-6-0), a 1-0 winner over Texas, on Friday in the second game of a doubleheader.
The match will be preceded by a second-round match between Sunday’s Santa Clara-Cal winner against Marist or Boston College.
