Spaniard leads Cloud County to first title

[NJCAA DIVISION I MEN] Spaniard German Barreiro scored two goals -- his 30th and 31st goals of the season -- and added an assist to give Cloud County (Kan.) Community College a 4-1 win over Monroe College (N.Y.) in the final of the NJCAA Division I Men's Tournament in Phoenix.

Barreiro, one of 20 foreigners on the Cloud County roster, opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game. Floridian Francis Villalta made it  2-0 just before the half on a blast from 30 yards out.

Israeli Sagi Lev-ari reduced Cloud County's lead to 2-1 with a goal at the 78th minute, but the Thunderbirds answered less than 60 seconds later when Barreiro fed Englishman Adam Halliday. Barreiro finished off the scoring in the 81st minute.

The championship was the first for the Thunderbirds, who entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed and defeated two-time defending champion Tyler Junior College on penalty kicks in Friday's semifinals.

The third-place game (Tyler vs. Darton) and fifth-place game (Lincoln vs. Pima) both ended in 1-1 ties.
