Taped EPL game almost doubles MLS Cup in ratings

  • USA Today, Monday, November 21, 2011 3:47 PM

ESPN's prime-time broadcast of MLS Cup 2011 drew a 0.8 overnight rating, almost half the overnight rating of 1.5 for Fox's taped coverage of the EPL game between Chelsea and Liverpool.

The ESPN overnight ratings for the Galaxy-Dynamo game were up 60 percent compared to those for the 2010 final between Colorado and FC Dallas but down 11 percent compared to the 2009 Galaxy-Real Salt Lake final, the other MLS Cup game involving David Beckham.

Jumping on the EPL bandwagon, Fox has been showing taped coverage of EPL games before or after its NFL coverage. These matches have aired earlier in the day on Fox Soccer and Fox Deportes.

Sunday's soccer ratings paled in comparison, though, to the Sunday NFL ratings: 8.4 for early-afternoon regionalized coverage on Fox, 14.2 for late-afternoon action on Fox and 14.0 for the Philadelphia Eagles-New York Giants game on NBC.

No wonder, the game was a deadly bore.

No suspense. We all knew who was going to win. Blame the MLS for setting up a playoff system where the final is rarely a meeting of 2 of the better teams.
