A stadium stampede at Indonesia's Southeast Asian Games final Monday against Malaysia left two people dead and left a 9-year-old boy in a coma.

The deadly crush occurred when fans broke through barriers at Jakarta's soldout, 88,000-capacity Gelora Bung Karno stadium at the game Malaysia won on penalty kicks over host Indonesia. Tens of thousands of fans without tickets had descended on the venue in central Jakarta.

"We are very sorry to hear such bad news," said Asian Football Confederation (AFC) acting president Zhang Jilong. "All soccer matches should be made secure by all member associations. They should take care not only of the players on the field but also the fans who are so excited outside the field."

Zhang, who added that spectators were packed into stairwells, said, "So we should take action to ask the Indonesian soccer federation to give us a detailed report about this."
