[WAKE FOREST-UCF] Led by 2011 ACC Offensive Player of the Year Katie Stengel, Wake Forest advanced to the Women's
College Cup for the first time with convincing 3-0 win over UCF.
“It’s a reward to have the opportunity with a weekend to win the national championship,” said Demon Deacons coach Tony da Luz. “We’ve done everything that we had to do to control our destiny and honor our No. 1 seeding. Now it’s just two games, and we’re not done yet.”
The Demon Deacons will meet Duke with which they have split in two meetings this season.
Duke prevailed 2-0 in the regular season and Wake Forest won, 2-1, in the semifinals of the ACC Championships.
The Deacons beat UCF with goals from Stengel, Kristen Meier and Marisa Park.
Stengel’s goal was her 19th of the season, extending her single-season record and putting her only one goal shy of the Wake Forest career goal-scoring mark of 36 that is held by Jill Hutchinson.
Fellow sophomore Aubrey Bledsoe made five saves in goal to extend her school record to 14 shutouts this season.
