Seminoles' penalty is game-changer

[FLORIDA STATE-VIRGINIA] Florida State is headed back to the Women's College Cup for the first time in four years thanks to a 3-0 victory over Virginia that ended a string of eight games without a win against the Cavaliers at the Seminole Soccer Complex.

Florida State registered goals from Frenchwoman Ines Jaurena from the penalty spot, Icelandic international Dagny Brynjarsdottir and Tiffany McCarty to end the No. 2 regional seed Cavs' season. The goals were the first scored by Florida State at home against Virginia since 2002.

Jaurena broke the scoreless tie in the first half, converting from the penalty spot in the 35th minute after McCarty was fouled from behind near the end line.

The Seminoles added to their lead in the second half when freshman Kristin Grubka settled a corner kick nicely right to the feet of Brynjarsdottir for her fifth goal of the season.

McCarty sealed the victory in the 76th minute with her team leading 18th goal of the season on a long breakaway.

FSU keeper Kelsey Wys made six saves, including two key stops in the first six minutes of the game.

“Congrats to Florida State; they were sharper than us and deserved to win today,” said Virginia coach Steve Swanson. “We had a couple good chances in the first 10 minutes and if we get something there, it is a different game. Giving up the first goal was a game-changer. In the second half, we were pushing forward and had some looks, but when they got the second goal it was going to be hard for us to come back.”
