Gaels reach Elite Eight for first time

[BROWN-ST. MARY'S] You expect to see teams like North Carolina, UCLA and Connecticut in the NCAA Division I quarterfinals, but St. Mary's? The Gaels reached the Elite Eight for the first time with a thrilling 3-2 overtime match at Brown in front of 1,330 fans at Stevenson Field in Providence on Sunday night.

"This was just a great soccer game," said Gales coach Adam Cooper. "Two very evenly matched teams and two squads that fought incredibly hard. Both teams deserved to be in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. You could see that it was going to come down to one little mistake or taking one opportunity and that's what it came down to. A great college soccer game."

Off a throw-in, the ball was touched and bounced into the air in the box, where Trevor Newquist dove at the ball and headed in his second goal of the match in the 98th minute.

The goal came after Brown came close with two chances late in regulation.

Newquist put St. Mary's ahead in the first half, but Brown went ahead on goals by Dylan Remick and Sean Rosa in the 51st and 64th minutes. Two minutes after Rosa's goal, Tom Mohoric equalized for the Gaels.
