The San Jose Earthquakes have announced plans to sell field-level luxury suites for a new soccer stadium, which has yet to receive development and building permits yet is still scheduled forcompletion in time for 2013 season. At a rental price of $350,000 for a five-year contract, the 12 suites can each accommodate 23 people. Team president David Kaval says they offer arare experience for a professional sporting event.
“It’s unique in all of Major League Soccer — or even internationally — to be that close to the players,” said Kaval. “The closest thingI would compare it to is the floor seats in the NBA.”
The suites will include 24-inch padded seats, couches, cocktail tables, flat-screen televisions, a bar area, catered food and asliding-glass door to protect patrons from errant shots and blocked crosses. Approval of the stadium’s planned development permit is expected at a Dec. 14 public meeting with planning directorJoe Horwedel. If that permit is received, the team will still have to apply for a building permit when it submits detailed drawings of the stadium for review. Some residents believetheir objections to the project are not being heeded.
Aimee Reyes, her husband, and their three children moved into a home only about 700 feet from the proposedstadium. She’s not pleased that the suites going on sale before the Dec. 14 meeting. “The hearing,” Reyes told Tracy Seipel, “is all for show.”
