What They're Saying

“Ten years from now we need to have at least 50 Landon Donovan-caliber American players in the league. We also need to have multiple players better than Donovan competing in MLS. With a country of 300 million-plus people, you would hope that could happen.”

-- MLS executive vice president Dan Courtemanche. (Yahoo!Sports)

I like Dan C, he's a CISL guy! But they've been saying this for 20 years. "someday our system will be producing lots of Claudio Reyna's and Tab Ramos!" quote from the 90's. Our youth development system is the Walmart of the soccer world. Mass quantities of mediocre product that fill out rosters of pro clubs. Not the elite quality, international stars like Donovan & Dempsey. There is a missing disconnect between our many high school age prospects and becoming a star player. Klinsman is seeing this, and is trying to convert "German Americans" as a bandaid. But that's not a long term answer.
