[MICHIGAN] A year after leading Michigan to the Men’s College Cup for the first time, head coach Steve Burns handed inhis resignation. He launched the Wolverines’ varsity program and coached them for 12 seasons, compiling a 122-98-22 overall record. But UM finished 2011 with a 5-14-1 record and a 1-5-0 mark in BigTen play.
“As a Michigan alum, I’m proud of everything we’ve been able to accomplish within the soccer program,” said Burns. “I will forever cherish the relationships that I havedeveloped over the past 12 years with players, assistant coaches, support staff and fellow coaches within the department. However, it’s time for a new direction in my life and leadership for Michigansoccer.”
Soony Saad, the 2010 Freshman of the Year, left school shortly after last season, and his brother, Hamoody, didn’t return for his junior season.
Goalie Chris Blais transferred to USF for his senior season and came within one game ofreturning to the College Cup.
“We appreciate Steve’s efforts on behalf of the University of Michigan,” said UM athletic director Dave Brandon.”Steve has been a valuable member of the men’s soccer program since its inception and we wish him well in his future endeavors.”
