Sweden bans striker for spousal abuse

The Swedish federation has banned Utrecht striker Alexander Gerndt from the national team after he was convicted of assaulting his former wife. The suspension is in place "until further notice."

A Swedish court on Tuesday said the 25-year-old had intentionally struck his former wife on the thigh with a soccer ball during a game that turned violent and gripped her by the throat after she destroyed his computer. Both assaults left bruises on the victim.
