Standing areas might return to Scottish stadiums

Scotland is looking to bring back terraces, standing-room areas, for fans at Premier League stadia.
“Since I joined the SPL in 2009, there has been widespread support amongst
fans to reintroduce safe standing areas," Neil Doncaster, chief executive of the SPL, said. “I am delighted that we have been able to respond positively
to supporters’ views on improving the match day experience.”
Celtic and Motherwell are interested in the idea of reintroducing terraces. They were banned in England following
the fan violence of the 1980s and the Hillsborough disaster in Sheffield in 1989. There is no such ban in Scotland, but applications for standing-room areas will have to be approved by local
authorities. Current SPL rules require teams to have seated areas with a minimum of 6,000 seats per stadium.
