Former Brazilian star Cate, who had a brief but spectacular tenure in MLS with the New England Revolution, died Tuesday morning when his car crashed into a
truck in the city of Ipe.
Cate scored eight goals and eight assists in 22 MLS games for Revs and helped them reach the 2001 U.S. Open Cup final, their first appearance in a championship
game.
After leaving New England, Cate spent four seasons in Italy at Sampdoria. He also played with Sao Paolo, Cruzeiro, and Flamengo, among seven Brazilian clubs, and Universidad
Catolica and Palestino in Chile. He won the 1992 Copa Libertadores with Sao Paulo and 1993 U-20 World Cup with Brazil.
Cate is the second former Rev to die in a little more than two
months. Winston Griffiths, 33, was found naked in the streets of his native Jamaica where he died of poisoning.
