Fernando Quirarte quit as Guadalajara coach after its 2-0 loss at home to lowly Tijuana left it in last place with no points after three games, its worststart to a Mexican championship.

Quirarte, nicknamed the “Sheriff,” handed in his resignation to sports director Rafael Ortega after the match atChivas’ new Omnilife stadium. He had only taken charge in October, leading Chivas to the top of the Torneo Apertura regular standings. The club fell to eighth-seed Queretaro in the quarterfinals.

“I’m stepping aside because I haven’t reversed the results and because I love this club. I hope the person who comes [in my place] can do what I couldn’t,” saidQuirarte.
