Barcelona's hopes of catching Real Madrid fading fast

  • Guardian, Thursday, February 2, 2012 1 AM

Although Barcelona beat Real Madrid, 3-1, in the first Clasico of the season last December, Real Madrid leads Barca at the top of the standings by seven points.

Sid Lowe writes that even though there are 18 weeks to go, the odds are against a fourth straight title for Barcelona:

"The Catalan papers are full of examples of similar leads being blown by Madrid before but that was another time and with other teams. Never before have the margins been so fine or the total number of points so high. Even if Barcelona were to win every single game between now and the end of the season, Madrid would still need to drop seven points. That's just one point fewer than they have dropped in the season so far. Barcelona may well be better than Madrid but Madrid are better than everyone else. And they only have to play Barcelona once more."

Its too early to judge if Barcelona won't catch up to Madrid. What if Real Madrid becomes injury plagued and blunders multiple times? Anyway, Barcelona has the best player in the world on their team, so anything can happen.
