Mexican clubs ban sports tabloid

Almost all Mexican First Division clubs banned reporters and photographers from sports tabloid Record this weekend in solidarity with Chivas Guadalajara, which accused the paper of "a campaign of hate and abuses."

Chivas and Record have had a long-standing feud over the paper's coverage. Chivas' poor play -- no wins in seven games -- has only make matters worse. Record has blamed Chivas' problems on owner Jorge Vergara and his wife Angelica Fuentes, who serves as executive president of the team, specifically their failure spend on players. Vergara said he has received death threats in response to the coverage.

UNAM backed away from the ban, allowing Record journalists access. "The professional soccer team of the UNAM has never contemplated the possibility of restricting in any manner the exercise of the freedom of expression," the team said in a statement.
