FIFA's reluctance to discuss changes in the international calendar has prompted the European Club Association, which comprises Europe's top 200 clubs, to declare it will boycotts upcoming talks
with the worldwide governing body.
ECA has turned down an invitation from FIFA to attend a calendar review on March 5. Spokesman Marc Schmigdall said, “We have had
discussions with UEFA and are close to finding a final agreement with them, but talks with FIFA have been disappointing and we have decided not to attend FIFA meetings until further notice."
Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and general secretary Michele Centenaro declined FIFA’s invitation to talks. ECA wants abolition of international match dates
in June and August and the annual number of dates reduced.
The ECA will present its own calendar proposals at their general assembly in Warsaw next week. All of the ECA’s member clubs
from 53 nations are likely to attend.
