French captain's riddle solved

[EURO 2012 COUNTDOWN] England isn't the only national team that has had a captain controversy. Ever since Patrice Evra famously led a revolt at the 2010 World Cup, France has desperately been seeking someone to lead its fragile team struggling to recover from its South Africa disaster. Coach Laurent Blanc tried no less seven captains in the last year and a half before announcing Tuesday that young goalie Hugo Lloris would captain the Bleus against Germany on Wednesday in Bremen and at Euro 2012 this summer.

Blanc didn't exactly give a ringing endorsement to the 25-year-old Lyon keeper who has 30 caps.

Asked whether his decision to hand the armband to Lloris on Wednesday meant he'd be the French captain in June, Blanc replied,  "You can think that, yes."

Lloris was one of three players Blanc was considering along with AC Milan center back Philippe Mexes and Barcelona left back Eric Abidal.

"I think that Hugo offers the most guarantees in this role," said Blanc. "He'll wear the armband, but don't forget that he's not the only important one in the squad. He seems to have the control and the clarity that you need for the role. It's a real choice, not a default choice."

Blanc's first choice was Alou Diarra -- who played for him at Bordeaux and was the France captain seven times -- but Diarra, now at Marseille, is not guaranteed of a starting role.

France roster:
Goalkeepers: Hugo Lloris (Lyon), Steve Mandanda (Marseille), Cedric Carrasso (Bordeaux).
Defenders: Anthony Reveillere (Lyon), Mathieu Debuchy (Lille), Mamadou Sakho (Paris SG), Philippe Mexes (AC Milan/ITA), Adil Rami (Valencia/SPA), Eric Abidal (Barcelona/SPA), Patrice Evra (Manchester United/ENG).
Midfielders: Yohan Cabaye (Newcastle/ENG), Alou Diarra (Marseille), Yann M'Vila (Rennes), Florent Malouda (Chelsea/ENG), Marvin Martin (Sochaux), Samir Nasri (Manchester City/ENG), Morgan Amalfitano (Marseille).
Forwards: Kevin Gameiro (Paris SG), Jeremy Menez (Paris SG), Mathieu Valbuena (Marseille), Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich/FRA), Olivier Giroud (Montpellier), Louis Saha (Tottenham/ENG).

Lloris was a good choice, Abidal would have been good as well.
