Five weeks after former USA defender and St. Louis University soccer coach Harry Keough died, another member of the team that beat England, 1-0, in the 1950 World Cup has passedaway.

John “Clarkie” Souza, a native of Fall River, Mass., died last Sunday at a nursing home in Pennsylvania. He played in the 1948 and 1952 Olympic Games and representedthe USA 16 times between 1947 and 1952. He was inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 1976.

Souza grew up in the Flint section of Fall River, a son of parents who immigrated from theAzores, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
