Veteran Chris Henderson
beat Columbus keeper Noah Palmer
from a tight angle and Jerrod Laventure
lobbed him from 28 yards as the New York Red Bulls notched a 2-0 win in
Columbus in their first game since Bruce Arena
was named head coach.
Interim head coach Richie Williams
was still on the sidelines for the Red Bulls, whom Arena won't take
over until August. Arena, who is also the team's sporting director, will retain Williams as an assistant and will also bring in a technical director. Former U.S. star John Harkes
, who like
Williams played for Arena at the University of Virginia and D.C. United, is reportedly in contention for the technical director's position.
The Red Bulls' win marked their fourth of the
season, their first against an Eastern Conference foe, their first road win, and their first back-to-back victory.
Chivas USA and Colorado, tied for third place in the Western
Conference, meet Thursday evening in Denver (8 pm ET, live on MLS Direct Kick Package, Altitude and Azteca America).
In their two previous meetings this season, Chivas USA won, 4-1, and
they tied, 1-1.
