Blatter loyalist to replace Warner

[CONCACAF] Jeffrey Webb, president of the Cayman Islands Football Association, is the only candidate nominated for Concacaf president to fill the term of the disgraced Jack Warner. Webb, hand-picked by FIFA president Sepp Blatter, received nominations from 29 Concacaf member associations. The election will take place on May 23 at the Concacaf Congress in Budapest, Hungary.

“I would like to acknowledge and thank the Concacaf member associations from across the Confederation that have demonstrated their confidence in me through their support of my nomination for president,” said Webb.  “I look forward to working with all of the members to strengthen our foundation and build on our unity, which has always been our strength.”

Webb will complete the final three years of Warner's term. The Trinidadian was re-elected to a sixth-consecutive, four-year stint last May but quit soon thereafter after being implicated in a scheme to bribe Caribbean members to back Qatari Mohamed bin Hammam in his bid to unseat Blatter as FIFA president.

They were accused of offering $40,000 cash payments to Caribbean voters. The Cayman Islands FA is believed to be only one of four federations not to accept the money.

Webb, the president of a Cayman Islanders bank, has been on a number of FIFA committees during Blatter's tenure.

Alfredo Hawitt of Honduras is now the acting president of Concacaf. Lisle Austin of Bahamas was named interim president following Warner's departure, but he was suspended in a power struggle with then-Concacaf secretary general Chuck Blazer.

It was inevitable than a Caribbean representative would replace Warner. Concacaf has 35 FIFA members of which the Caribbean has 25.
