Inter Likely to Receive 2006 Scudetto

Not the way you'd want to win a trophy, but it looks as though Inter Milan will be handed last season's Scudetto, provided the appeals of disgraced clubs Juventus and AC Milan are turned away. The sports tribunal revised the standings from last season, relegating Juventus and deducting AC Milan 44 points, leaving Milan's cross-town rival, Internazionale, at the top of the Serie A for the 2005-06 campaign. It was initially proposed that last season's Scudetto be declared void in the wake of the massive scandal which involved four top Serie A clubs. However, Inter's owner, oil tycoon Massimo Moratti, has insisted from the outset that his club be awarded the coveted prize to clearly separate Inter and the rest from the guilty clubs. "Otherwise we're saying that the whole of Serie A was involved in the scandal," Moratti said. The Italian soccer federation will meet with the Italian soccer league to make a final determination. It's widely believed the title will be handed to the Milan club; in fact, Inter is so confident of this that Coppa Italia logo on replica Inter shirts has now been moved to the sleeve to make way for the Scudetto insignia.
