Santos Laguna won its fourth Mexican league title since the club’s founding in 1983 with a 2-1 win over Monterrey on Sunday for a 3-2 aggregate victory. The Clausura title follows Santos’ threerunner-up finishes in the previous four Mexican seasons. (The Mexican year is split into two seasons, Apertura and Clausura).

Santos’ last title came with the Clausura 2008 when its teamincluded U.S. product Edgar Castillo. American Herculez Gomez scored five league goals this season for Santos but didn’t see action in the final series.

Thefinal win extracted some revenge for Santos after losing to Monterrey 4-3 on aggregate in last month’s Concacaf Champions League final.

Daniel Luduena
and OribePeralta scored for Santos in Sunday’s victory, which delivered Monterrey coach Victor Manuel Vucetich‘s first ever finals loss. His teams had previously won 12 straightfinals, including five Mexican first division titles and two Concacaf Champions League victories.
