English Premier League lost a total of $560 million despite a record $3.6 billion in income during the 2010-11 season.

Manchester City, in the third year since Sheikh Mansour binZayed Al Nahyan bought the club, lost $308 million — the greatest financial loss in the history of soccer.

Chelsea lost the next highest amount, $106 million, bankrolled by theirowner, the Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, who loaned $147 million to the club during 2010-11 season. Liverpool, owned American John Henry‘s Fenway Sports Group,lost $78 million.

Of the clubs that were in the Premier League in 2010-11, the year of most clubs’ latest published accounts, eight made a profit, of $152 million in total.

  1. Yet we’ll never see any sanctions at all against clubs like Manchester City, FC Chelsea, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, or FC Liverpool, now will we? How about the Italian clubs that NEVER operate in the black and frequently fail to pay or fail to pay in full their players?
