Copa Libertadores defending champion Santos scored a late goal to force a 1-1 aggregate tie before beating a 10-man Velez Sarsfield to earn a semifinal date with fellow Brazilian club Corinthians,
which prevailed over Emelec of Ecuador 3-0 on aggregate in its quarterfinal.
Velez took a 1-0 first-leg lead to Santos but in the 39th minute its goalkeeper, Marcelo
Barovero, was red-carded for taking down Neymar as he prepared to shoot into an empty net. Alan Kardec scored the Santos winner in the 74th minute to tie the
score on aggregate and force a penalty-kick tiebreaker.
In the other semifinal, Universidad de Chile -- a PK shootout winner over Paraguay's Libertad -- will face Boca Juniors, which beat
Chile's Union Espanola, 5-3 aggregate.
