Toronto FC trio sent home after arrests

The three Toronto FC players arrested for public intoxication outside of a Houston nightclub early Monday -- Miguel Aceval, Luis Silva and Nick Soolsma --were ordered home. Toronto coach Paul Mariner said they wouldn't be available for Wednesday's game against the Dynamo.

The incident came the evening after TFC arrived in Houston following its 2-0 loss at Sporting Kansas City the day before -- Mariner's first game in charge after the departure of Dutchman Aron Winter. Word around TFC was that Mariner, who joined the club last year as its director of player development, was going to grant the players more freedom than what they had under Winter -- though this was not the kind of freedom he imagined for players on the 1-10-0 team.

"I think it doesn't matter whether it's basketball, ice hockey or whatever sport," said Mariner, a former England international. "I've been a professional athlete myself and you're held to a higher level of order because you're in the spotlight and you're living in a privileged position of being a so-called elite athlete. But sometimes people make poor choices and we've got to get to the bottom of it. I don't want to jump to any conclusion myself, but obviously there was something going on because the police were involved.
