MLS clubs stop USL PRO trio in their tracks

[U.S. OPEN CUP] The Philadelphia Union and Sporting Kansas City ended the runs of Harrisburg City Islanders and Dayton Dutch Lions with large victories, but Chivas USA needed a late goal from young Colombian Jose Correa to oust the Charlotte Eagles, USL PRO's third entrant in Tuesday's Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals, with a 2-1 victory.

Philadelphia opened up a 3-0 lead, had the City Islanders cut the deficit to 3-2 with two early second-half goals but then added two late goals to advance to the semifinals against Sporting Kansas City on July 11 with a 5-2 win.
 
Freddy Adu, Jack McInerney and Lionard Pajoy scored to put the Union up by three goals after 29 minutes.

Harrisburg got goals by Brian Ombiji and Morgan Langley two minutes apart early in the second half, but Pajoy added a second goal and Gabriel Gomez came off the bench to score in his first Philly appearance in more than a month.

C.J. Sapong scored twice to up his Open Cup total to five goals in three games, and Graham Zusi added the third goal as SKC ended Dayton's longest run in the competition with a 3-0 win.

The Eagles were trailing Chivas USA on Correa's goal in the 65th minute when Jorge Herrera, another Colombian, equalized in the 89th minute.

But the 19-year-old Correa headed home the winner late in stoppage time off Laurent Courtois' free kick to send Chivas USA into the semifinals against the three-time champion Seattle Sounders.
