Netherlands coach quits

Bert van Marwijk has resigned as Netherlands coach in wake of his team losing all three of its games at Euro 2012.

Van Marwijk, who guided the Dutch to a runner-up finish at the 2010 World Cup, had a contract through the 2016 European Championship. But the Netherlands, which entered Euro 2012 as a favorite, fell to Denmark, Germany and Portugal.

After post-tournament meetings with the Dutch soccer federation (KNVB) that it called “open, frank and constructive,” Van Marwijk decided there was no reason to continue.
