John Spencer sacked by Portland

The Portland Timbers are firing their head coach, John Spencer, reports to the Oregonian, which quotes a source telling it, "Change was needed." The source explained that owner Merritt Paulson is committed to winning and the decision was about Spencer's "long-term fit," not one incident or loss.

Spencer was hired for Portland's inaugural MLS season of 2011, when it went 11-14-9 (win-loss-tie) and just missed the playoffs.

The Timbers have started the 2012 season collecting just 19 points with a 5-8-4 record, are second-to-last in the Western Conference, and are 0-6-2 away from Jeld-Wen Field. They have not won a road game since October.

General manager Gavin Wilkinson, who coached the Timbers in lower division ball in 2007-2010, will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season, according to the Oregonian.
