During celebrations of Palmeiras’ Brazilian Cup final win in various districts of Osasco, a suburban Sao Paulo town, eight people were shot dead.

A total of nine people were shot inOsasco, the fifth most populous town in Sao Paulo’s sprawling metropolitan area.

The killers took advantage of the commotion caused by exploding fireworks to attack the victims, themilitary police said, but it insisted that the killings were not linked to the Palmeiras victory celebrations. “None of the victims wore Palmeiras jerseys” and the relatives did not make a link withthe Palmeiras celebrations, the police statement noted.

Palmeiras won the Brazilian Cup, 3-1, on aggregate late Wednesday after drawing 1-1 in the second leg of the final against Curitibain the capital of the southeastern state of Parana. The win qualified Palmeiras for the Copa Libertadores.
