Teen star Villarreal rescues Galaxy with golazo

[VIDEO PICK] The Los Angeles Galaxy looked to be headed to defeat at the Vancouver Whitecaps after going two goals down in the first half hour, but it rallied for two goals in the last nine minutes to earn a 2-2 tie. David Beckham scored the first goal, but the second was scored by 18-year-old Jose Villareal, playing just second MLS game.

Villarreal, a homegrown signing, collected the ball on the right side of the penalty area, eluded Gershon Koffie and cut back before launching a shot with his left foot that beat Joe Cannon to the far post.

“He's been doing it week in and week out in training," said Beckham. "He works hard, he's a young kid, he likes to learn, and he listens to the older players.”

Villarreal joined the Galaxy academy program from 2011 Development Academy champion Pateadores last summer but wasn't eligible until July to play for the Galaxy in MLS action. Surgery to repair bilateral lower-leg compartment syndrome sidelined Villarreal in preseason.

"Bruce Arena just told me to go out there and 'do what you do,' just score,” Villarreal said in a postgame interview on KDOC's coverage. “I've been doing it in practice, and things have been going well for me. I'm happy about that.”

Villarreal's goal capped a wild finish to the game between the Western Conference contenders.

After Beckham cut the deficit to 2-1, the Caps had shots by Koffie and Scotsman Barry Robson hit the bar.

As a Whitecaps fan at the game, this was painful. The third such game this season where the Caps have gone ahead only to let the other team back into it.Congrats to your Villareal though. Well done lad.

Villareal's movement prior to the shot was a breath of fresh air which rarely happens in MLS.
