UNDER-17 WORLD CUP: Reaction after USA-Brazil

Coach John Ellinger

On Freddy AduÆs play in the tournament:

öHeÆs drawn a lot of attention. HeÆs a wonderful young player and will develop into an even better player, no question about it. HeÆs still learning and maturing as a soccer player in as far as what to do and when to do it on the field. I think his youth gets in the way sometimes there, but when he does get the ball he can be a very electric player and has a very bright future in the game.ö

On the teamÆs play:

''We were very disappointed in the teamÆs performance against Spain. They seemed to just sit back and it wasnÆt what we told them to do. In this game we wanted to take Brazil, put them off the pedestal, and play. We tried to keep the ball more and create some opportunities to score and I think we did do that. It looked like in the second half it was getting better than even the first half. Then I think the first two shots they had in the second half were the two goals. The one that Phil mishandled was a cross and just ended up in the back of the net.

On the game:

''Unfortunately for us it ended up 3-0, but I didnÆt feel like I had just been through a 3-0 game. I felt we definitely played better than that, but my hats off to Brazil as they move on. WeÆve had a wonderful time here.ö

Freddy Adu

On the game:

''I give Brazil all the credit. They were a very good team obviously, and I think they will go on and win the whole thing.ö

On the Brazilians' style of play:

''I feel like thatÆs how I play. I go out there on the field and I like the little touches, doing moves and beating people off the dribble. ThatÆs exactly how they play. IÆm not going to lie about it, I admire it a lot. And it works for them, so why stop.ö On how he played:

''I felt like I gave it my all, but in the end we just didnÆt get lucky. ThatÆs the way I think about it. I mean, give credit to Brazil. They were awesome and deserved to beat us today. Personally, I felt like I gave it my all, but the injury was a little too much to overcome. Hopefully IÆll get better soon and get back to my old self.ö

Forward Jamie Watson

On the game:

''Obviously, we didnÆt get the result we wanted to. As long as we kept it 0-0 we could stay in the game. We were unlucky on the goal off the corner kick. I think that was our only mistake of the half. When we came out we wanted to get the first goal in the second half to get the game back at 1-1, but unfortunately they came out and got the second goal, and then the third. It just kind of all went downhill from there.

On playing Brazil:

''ItÆs always a tough game drawing Brazil and they're such a good team I wouldnÆt be surprised if they went all the way and won. We werenÆt going to roll over and have an easy quarterfinal win for them. We were going to make it tough, we just didnÆt come out and play the best we could.''
