Ballouchy returns home to Quakes

[MLS TRANSACTIONS] The trade of Mehdi Ballouchy from the New York Red Bulls to the San Jose Earthquakes is a homecoming of sorts for the Moroccan-born midfielder as he will be playing at Buck Shaw Stadium on the campus of Santa Clara, where he was an All-American.

The Quakes acquired him Monday in exchange for a 2013 international slot and a conditional 2013 draft pick.

Ballouchy has 13 goals and 24 assists in 164 games over seven MLS seasons with Real Salt Lake, Colorado and New York.

The Bulls' acquisition of Australia international Tim Cahill made Ballouchy expendable.

He will provide depth to the San Jose midfield. The Quakes recently parted with Colombian playmaker Tressor Moreno.

Ballouchy first settled in the Bay Area to complete high school at Gunn High School in Palo Alto after he moved to the United States as a teenager, first to Denver.

First went Dane Richards, now Ballouchy; next should be Roy Miller. Coach Backe has finally come to grips that players with borderline soccer IQs are a liability.
