Portland owner defends winless coach

The Portland Timbers are have a 0-5-2 win-loss-tie record since firing John Spencer and giving general manager Gavin Wilkinson heading duties. Their most recent loss, 3-2 to the New York Red Bulls, has only fueled the passion of the growing number of disappointed fans, reports Geoffrey C. Arnold.

The hashtag #GWOut has surfaced on Twitter, but Timbers owner Merritt Paulson said he has no plans to fire Wilkinson, who was named interim head coach in early July.

"Gavin is not going anywhere," Paulson said on Monday, the day after he engaged in an at-times heated exchange with fans on Twitter. "More big changes is not what this team needs right now. ...

"We've stripped the team down and are implementing a whole new system. What we're doing now is starting to bear some fruit. Our statistics are up and even though our wins are not, we're starting to play on the road like we do at home. We're scoring goals and playing attractive soccer."
