Americans have sights on quarterfinal berth

[USA-CHINA] The USA, which had to settle for a 1-1 tie with China in its second game at the Under-20 Women's World Cup in Japan, faces defending champion Germany in its final Group D match on Monday, but it is still in good shape to advance to the quarterfinals. The Americans outshot China, 17-3, but only managed one goal, scored by Maya Hayes, her fourth in two games.

The USA will clinch a berth in the quarterfinals with a win or a draw against Germany when they meet at Miyagi Stadium in Rifu (TV: ESPNU, ESPN3, 2:50 a.m. ET). The Americans will also advance with a defeat unless they lose to Germany and China beats Ghana in the other Group D match by a combination of nine or more goals.

The Germans already clinched a berth in the quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over Ghana on Thursday.

The Americans entered Thursday's game at the Hiroshima Big Arch Stadium with a 14-1-0 record in 2012 and 4-1 and 3-0 wins over China in friendlies played at the Home Depot Center, but they fell behind China on its first chance of the match.

Shen Lil buried her shot into the upper left corner past a helpless Bryane Heaberlin to give China the surprise lead in the 19th minute.

The Americans created several chances from the left side and finally equalized in the 36th minute when North Carolina's Kealia Ohai beat her defender and from the end line fed Hayes, who put a right-footed touch on the ball past China goalkeeper Shen Li.

U.S. coach Steve Swanson made two changes in the starting lineup from the team's 4-0 win against Ghana on Monday. Duke's Kelly Cobb made her debut in the U-20 World Cup and Notre Dame freshman Cari Roccaro got the start in the back.

Two-sport Richmond star Becca Wann made her U-20 World Cup debut, coming in for Hayes in the 86th minute.
