[NORTH CAROLINA-GARDNER WEBB] On a night that the Tar Heels paid tribute to the late Kirk Urso, captain of their 2011
national championship team, with his No. 3 painted on the field and on their jerseys, it was only fitting that Carolina took a 1-0 lead over Gardner-Webb in the third minute on a goal by junior
Andy Craven, making his Tar Heel debut. Carolina added three goals in the second half and won 4-0.
Urso, who died unexpectedly on Aug. 5, was the
inspirational leader of the 2011 Tar Heels, who won the national championship after falling short at the College Cup in each of the three previous years.
Freshman Danny Garcia set up Jordan Gafa and Chipper Root for goals before David Walden converted a penalty for the Tar Heels' final goal in the 89th minute.
Carolina outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs by a 17-1 margin.
Preseason All-American goalkeeper Scott Goodwin was never tested and claimed his 25th career shutout.
