Portland Timbers court Caleb Porter

Geoffrey C. Arnold reports that the Portland Timbers have offered their head coaching job to University of Akron coach Caleb Porter.

General manager Gavin Wilkinson has been serving as interim coach for the Timbers since they fired John Spencer on July 9. Their 2-1 victory over Vancouver on Saturday ended an eight-game losing streak.

Porter has been Akron coach since 2006 and won a national title in 2010. He was the head coach of the U.S. U-23 men's national team that failed to qualify for the recently concluded Summer Olympics in London.
