49ers pull out another overtime victory

[CHARLOTTE-COASTAL CAROLINA]Thomas Allen's golden goal gave Charlotte a 1-0 win over No. 12 Coastal Carolina for the No. 5 49ers' second overtime win in 48 hours at Transamerica Field.

“Incredible that this was our second double overtime game in a 48-hour period,” Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. “I was proud of our effort and desire to win tonight.”

Allen was at the far post to tap in a corner kick from Tyler Gibson in the 102nd minute.

“We came close to scoring the entire game,” Allen said. “In double overtime, Gibbo put a great ball in and I was at the back post at the right time."

The Chanticleers played most of the game with 10 men after the ejection of Jamaican Jhamie Hyde in the 24th minute.

The two teams were whistled for 42 fouls and handed four yellow cards.

The 49ers limited All-American forward Ashton Bennett, who scored 23 goals last season, to only one shot.

“Our game plan was whenever their forwards got the ball we would have numbers around them,” Langan said. “It was a total team defensive effort.”

Charlotte concludes its three-game season opening homestand Friday when its hosts 2-0-0 UAB at Transamerica Field.
