Barton's league ban extended to France

Joey Barton won't be able to get out of serving the remaining nine games of his 12-match league ban imposed in England by moving to Marseille.

Barton was found guilty of two charges of violent conduct -- kicking out at Sergio Aguero and aiming a headbutt at Vincent Kompany -- after he had been sent off for elbowing Carlos Tevez in Queen's Park Rangers' 3-2 loss to Manchester City on the final day of the 2012 EPL season.

Barton was loaned to Marseille for the 2012-13 season, but the French league (LFP) confirmed Thursday that the ban will roll over, meaning Barton won't be able to play for Marseille in Ligue 1 until Bordeaux until Nov. 18. He's eligible to pay for OM in the Europa League.

"According to FIFA rules," the LFP said on its Web site, "the player, who has already served three games, has been suspended for the next nine matches in the French competitions."
