Early lethargy proves costly

[UCLA-LOYOLA MARYMOUNT] No. 1 UCLA outshot Loyola Marymount, 27-4, but had to settle for a 1-1 tie with Lions, who had lost all 11 previous meetings with the Bruins.

LMU struck first in the game on Jenni Benger's header off a corner kick from Jocelyn Blankenship in the 27th minute.

"When the first half started, we were doing a decent job of holding onto the ball and moving it around a bit," said LMU coach Michelle Myers. "And then we get the corner kick and the goal and now it's a matter maintaining that intensity of play. Defending was such a big thing tonight."

Less than four minutes after intermission, the Bruins tied it up on Kristiana Konkol-Mroczkowski's on goal.

"I think we were a little lethargic the first 15-20 minutes of the game, but I really liked their sense of urgency at the end of the first half and especially going into the second half," said UCLA coach B.J. Snow. "At the end of the day, we created enough opportunities to get the result, and we didn't put it in the back of the net. We have to give LMU a lot of credit."
