What They're Saying

"I've been through qualifiers myself. When we won the World Cup in 1990, we almost didn't qualify. It was down to the last game, which we won 2-1, and the opponent -- Wales at that time -- Mark Hughes missed a 100 percent chance in the 88th minute. And Germany wouldn't have gone to the World Cup. That's how close it can get."

-- U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann after the USA made its World Cup qualifying path a little easier by beating Jamaica, 1-0. (Sporting News)

Seems like Mr. Klinsmann's memory is not all that good. West Germany qualified easily in 1990, securing the qualification before the last game against Wales. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_%E2%80%93_UEFA_Group_4

Actually, his memory is accurate. Not every group runner up qualified out of UEFA in 1990. If they tied or lost to Wales, then Denmark would have qualified out of Group 1 instead.

    Thanks for trying though.
