High-scoring Terrapins show resolve

[N.C. STATE-MARYLAND] Jake Pace, Schillo Tshuma and John Stertzer all scored for No. 1 Maryland, which rallied from an early 1-0 deficit and beat unbeaten and untied N.C. State, 3-2. The high-scoring Terrapins have scored three or more goals in four straight matches.

Alex Martinez scored his first of two goals in the 5th minute, but Maryland responded with less than five minutes remaining in the first half when Pace scored on a header from 10 yards off a corner kick from Taylor Kemp.

Tshuma gave Maryland its first lead two minutes into the second half on another assist from Kemp, and Pace set up the third goal when he was taken down in the box in the 60th minute, paving the way for Stertzer's penalty kick.

The Pack answered in the 63rd minute when a similar call led to Martinez's seventh goal of the season on a penalty kick.

“This was a heck of an ACC game and a great win tonight,” Maryland coach Sasho Cirovski said. “We started brightly but fell behind early and our guys showed tremendous resolve and maturity and equalized at the half. The second half we came out firing and really put N.C. State under some pressure. We showed some nice composure to finish the game. The atmosphere tonight at N.C. State was the best I’ve seen in 20 years and it’s clear this program is on the rise.”

The game drew 2,342 fans Friday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.

"I was pleased with the way we started the game," said NC State coach Kelly Findley. "But I was equally disappointed with the way we opened the second half. We fought hard against the best team in the country tonight, and while we're obviously disappointed to let this win slip away, we competed in a way that we can build on for the rest of the season."
