Monarchs spoil party before record crowd

[CREIGHTON-OLD DOMINION] Englishman Tim Hopkinson scored two goals to lead unbeaten Old Dominion over Creighton, 2-1, before a record crowd of 6,848 fans at Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Neb.

“We started the game with a bit of nerves and conceded an early goal," said ODU coach Alan Dawson. "Our response after we settled down was terrific and we made a statement with a huge win against a great opponent on the road ..:"

The Blue Jays struck first with a goal less than two minutes into the match by senior Jose Gomez, but the Monarchs got the equalizer with 20 minutes left in the half as Hopkinson scored on an assist from senior Yannick Smith.

In the 71st minute, Hopkinson and Chris Harmon broke in on Creighton keeper Alex Bolowich two steps in front the any Bluejay defender. Hopkinson fired a shot that Alex Bolowich was able to deflect. Unfortunately, Harmon gathered the ball and fired an attempt of his own that was stopped by Creighton senior Andrew Ribeiro. The deflection caromed right to Hopkinson, who scored his seventh goal put the Monarchs up for good.

The two teams combined for 38 shots, but Bolowich made nine saves, and ODU's French goalkeeper, Victor Francoz, came up with eight.
