U-20 Women's World Cup reunion ends in 2-2 tie

[VIRGINIA-NORTH CAROLINA] U.S. U-20 Women's World Cup champion Kealia Ohai scored a pair of breakaway goals to allow No. 6 North Carolina to earn a 2-2 draw at No. 5  Virginia Sunday afternoon. Caroline Miller had both goals for the Cavaliers.

The two teams went to overtime for the seventh time in the last 11 meetings. The tie ended an eight-match winning streak for UVA (8-1-1), while UNC is now 4-2-2.

Ohai, who returned to UNC last Monday after missing the first six games of the season, scored on a breakaway just 56 seconds before the end of the first half after taking a through ball from freshman Reilly Parker.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Miller struck for a pair of goals,  her sixth and seventh of the season, in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

UNC’s Meg Morris came close to tying the game but her shot from 30 yards out hit the crossbar in the 60th minute.  But she later sprung Ohai, who broke through from the defense and scored the game-tying goal with 17 minutes to play.

Freshman Bryane Heaberlin came up big in the late stages for Carolina, making saves on shots by Morgan Brian, her U-20 Women's World Cup teammate, in the 87th minute and by Miller in the opening minute of the second overtime.

“When you look at the game and the chances we had and the ones we gave up, a tie is probably a just result,” said Virginia coach Steve Swanson. “I think later in the year, this result will look pretty good. Right now, it doesn’t feel good because it’s not what we wanted, especially after having the lead in the second half.  But given the way the game went, I think we can both take a point from this game and look to build on it.”

Swanson coached Ohai, Heaberlin, Brian and UNC's Crystal Dunn at the U-20 Women's World Cup in Japan.

Ohai scored the winning goal in the final set up by Dunn, while Heaberlin was in goal, and Brian captained the USA.
