[PENN STATE-ILLINOIS] Maya Hayes, last year’s national leading scorer, made it four goals and two assists in threegames since returning from the Under-20 Women’s World Cup with a goal and an assist in No. 9 Penn State’s 4-0 win at Illinois. A three-goal blitz in the first 18 minutes was the difference in the BigTen showdown.
Redshirt Tani Costa, freshman Mallory Weber and sophomore Kori Chapic added the additional Penn State goals.
Costa’s goal tied for the quickest one in school history. Tiffany Weimerscored 56 seconds in also against USC in 2006.
Hayes, who had 31 goals and eight assists in 2011, and Christine Nairn each had two goals onFriday in the Nittany Lions’ 4-1 win at Northwestern.
The Penn State defense shut down Illini star Vanessa DiBernardo, Hayes’ teammate on the U.S.U-20 Women’s World Cup championship team.
“In defense, hesitation can be a difficult thing to deal with, and I think we hesitated a little bit in those first 20 minutes,” said Illinoiscoach Janet Rayfield, “and Penn State punished us and made us pay for our hesitation.”
