Sjoberg's dominance in air carries Golden Eagles

[PROVIDENCE-MARQUETTE] Central defenders John Pothast and Axel Sjoberg scored second-half goals Saturday to lift No. 7 Marquette to a 2-0 win over Providence in its Big East division opener for its 10th victory in a row.

A yellow card on the Friars’ Wilder Arboleda after a hard tackle on Golden Eagle Sebastian Jansson ultimately led to the opening goal in the 59th minute.

Junior Bryan Ciesiulka's ensuing free kick from about 40 yards out was flicked to the back post by the 6-foot-7 Sjoberg, and Pothast was there to slot it between the goalkeeper and the right post to give MU a 1-0 lead.

Sjoberg got involved on another set piece in the 72nd minute, heading home a corner kick taken by Paul Dillon. It was Dillon’s team-leading fifth assist of the campaign.

Redshirt sophomore Charlie Lyon earned his sixth shutout of the season, making a career-high nine saves and getting help from the post twice down the stretch.

The win sets the stage for perhaps the biggest home game in the Golden Eagles' history as they welcome No. 2 UConn at Valley Fields on Saturday.
