Paulson tirade lands Portland owner $25,000 fine

[MLS SPOTLIGHT] Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson was fined $25,000 for confronting match officials after Saturday's game against D.C. United and blasting them on Twitter.

Paulson was livid with a penalty called against the Timbers in the second half and he confronted Michael Kennedy and his assistants as they walked toward their locker room.

Paulson's tweets landed him in even hotter water:

"Let's be real...nfl replacement refs have nothing on mls primary refs. Sick of this garbage"

"I will happily take the fine. Its atrocious. Should balance out. Guess policy is to balance JWF atmosphere"

"All season long...not a single damn pk awarded to us. Numerous cut/dry blown calls. And let's give DC a gift for good measure"

The day after, he cooled off a little:

"Owner shouldn't be part of the story. We will keep seeking to improve and eventually we will succeed.(And maybe someday I won't tweet angry)"

Yeah. But he is right. The MLS/US soccer refs are terrible. We need to put in more money to develop referees as we do players. If anything the NFL replacement ref fiasco shows how much crappy calls can ruin the product on the field.
