Debt-ridden Atletico Madrid insists that Radamel Falcao will not be leaving the club until the end of the La Liga season, despite intense interest from the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea. However, general manager Miguel Angel Gil Marin also revealed that selling Falcao would rid the club of its massive debt burden.
“Falcao will carry on here, certainly until the end of the season,” Gil Marin said Monday. “In Europe there are 50 clubs with higher earnings than us, and if we sold Falcao for €60m ($77.5 million) then yes it would solve our debts,” he added. “We are striving to perform a miracle, which is what we are doing with the resources we have available.”
According to ESPN Soccernet, Chelsea is likely Falcao’s eventual destination, but not until next summer. Atletico Madrid owes the Spanish tax authorities $148.6 million and prize money from winning last season’s Europa League has been withheld by UEFA because of its failure to make repayments.
