Seminoles push shutout streak to 894 minutes

[FLORIDA STATE-VIRGINIA] Frenchwoman Ines Jaurena, whose penalty kick was the difference when Florida State and Virginia met in the quarterfinals of the 2011 NCAA Women's Tournament, scored from the penalty spot in the 96th minute to lead No. 1 Florida State to a 1-0 victory over No. 9 Virginia in front of a crowd of 1,379 inside the Seminole Soccer Complex.

“That was a real hard-fought game for us,” said FSU coach Mark Krikorian. “Virginia gave us everything that we could handle.  We knew that the game on Thursday night against Virginia Tech was a tough game [1-0 win]; we had to battle for 90 minutes.  Coming back against a very good Virginia team today, we knew they would push us to the limit.  Fortunately in the end, we did enough to create a chance and get a penalty and Ines buried it.”

On the penalty, Hikaru Murakami won the ball before laying it off to Jamia Fields, who made a nice move to her right before being tripped by a Cavalier player in the penalty area.

The goal for Jaurena was her third of the season -- all three have gone down as game-winners.

The win improved the Seminoles' record to 14-0-0 and extended their scoreless streak to 894 minutes, surpassing the previous record established back in 2003. FSU has won all seven ACC games by shutouts.

“It was disappointing the way we lost,” said Cavaliers coach Steve Swanson. “I thought we fought really hard the entire game and we put ourselves in position to get a result on the road against the No. 1 team in the nation. It just didn’t go our way today. We need to keep working on some things because I still think we can get much better as a team. That will be our focus this week as we get ready for these final two regular season games.”
